Tip of the Day June 6, 2013

As you know, summer is coming up and it means HEAT! The problem with heat, however, is that foods tend to spoil faster. Bacteria love the heat. Here are some tips to help prevent food-borne illness.

  1. When shopping for food, pick up refrigerated and frozen foods last. Watch for unsanitary practices and conditions inside the store. Refrigerate or freeze perishable foods within one hour of purchasing. 
  2. Put meant, poultry, and seafood in the coldest part of the refrigerator. If you're not going to cook it within 48 hours, store them in the freezer. 
  3. After cooking a meal, the food should be refrigerated within 2 hours of serving. 
  4. Cook meats until it's thoroughly cooked.  (click on the link to find out what the internal temperatures should be for meats)

Having a food-borne illness is not a fun thing. Hopefully, these tips help.
