Guacamole

íHola everyone! Cómo están ustedes? Hice guacamole y es muy delicioso. Es muy rico. Yes. This guacamole is really yummy and rich. What's also good about this is that it's really healthy! It's really low in calories. It's around 40 calories for 2 tablespoons. That's barely 10 calories more than Trader Joe's. What's cool about this guacamole is that it's made with nonfat greek yogurt. It tastes great just the way it is.
I decided to make this because last weekend, I ate some Mexican food at Six Flags and then I started craving this. But, I wanted a healthy version of it. So, I decided to make this. Here's the recipe. I eat it with the naan I made and you can eat it with whatever you want.

Ingredients:
  • 3 avocados
  • 7 oz salsa verde
  • 3/4 cup nonfat greek yogurt
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • garlic salt

Directions:

  1. Rinse the avocados. Cut it in half and then peel it out into a food processor. Add the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Pulse it until it's a smooth paste.
  3. Enjoy. I ate it with naan and in sandwiches.

Yea. I know the color i different, but it still tastes amazing.

Do you guys like Mexican?

Dulce de leche cheerios, apple cinnamon smiles, apple chips. green tea kit kat, multi grain rounds (costco), quaker chewy granola bars, and Balance Bar Honey Peanut Reviews!!

Hey hey everyone. I'm so sorry for the long title, but I just want to put a lot of reviews in just one post. I find it kind of annoying to have a post for each separate thing, so, bear with me here. I'm going to have a few recipes coming in the next couple posts, which I will post after this. But, for now, here are some health food reviews.

First up is the Dulce de Leche Cheerios.

These cheerios are my favorite so far out of the cheerio flavors, well, tastewise, that is. They really do taste like dulce de leche. They're really sweet. They can be eaten for dessert too. Once, I ate them with dark chocolate chips and it was the best. However, the calories are higher than the multigrain cheerios, which I also like as well.

Next is Apple Cinnamon Smiles.

Don't these look cute? I got them at a local healthy food store. They taste really good too! They are crunch and have a really nice cinnamon flavor. There was a hint of apple, but there wasn't much. It still tasted really good.

Then, there are the Apple Chips

As I've said before, my cousin introduced these to me. They're quite addicting! I love how it's all natural and only two ingredients: apples and cinnamon. They really curb your sweet tooth craving. I love these. Apples and cinnamon, what can go wrong with this combo? The only downside is that there are still parts of the core in it.

There's also the Green Tea Kit Kat.  I know these are NOT healthy, but it's okay to indulge once in a while. Also, it's an Asian flavor so I just had to get it. I found it at my local Japanese store, but they're expensive. I'm still mad at myself for not buying the red bean kit kat and the iced gem buscuits at China, bu oh well.

I really don't know how to describe the flavor of this, but the texture is the same as any other kit kat. I do love this flavor though and the coating taste like green tea.

Up next is the Multi-Grain Rounds  from Costco.

This is the Costco version of sandwich thins. And, guess what? It's absolutely healthy and delicious. Even though it's multi-grain, each grain used is whole grain. They're perfect to eat, with veggie burgers, peanut butter sandwiches, whatever you want to eat it with. Plus, it's cheaper.

Another Costco product are the Quaker Chewy Granola Bars.

I know. These chewy bars are a classic. But, guess what? They're pretty decent tasting too. They don't fill you up much though. My favorite flavor is the Chocolate Chip Peanut one. It really tastes like a dessert bar, with the chocolate chips and the peanut butter chips. So delicious! My next favorite is the Oatmeal Raisin. They're really sweet, but in a good way. They have pieces of  oatmeal cookies in their too! Last but not least is the classic chocolate chip flavor. There wasn't really a wow factor to this one. It was just, there.

The last but not least is the Balance Bar Honey Peanut.

Sorry about the lighting! But, anyway, these bars were delicious as well. At first bite, you could taste to yogurt and honey, but not much of the peanut butter. Then, all of the sudden, you get to the peanut butter flavor. It was so delicious! I still like the chocolate chip cookie dough better, but this is good as well.

I guess this ends the review.

What's your favorite health food?
Have you ever tried other kit kat flavors?

Carbs Carbs Carbs!!!

As I've mentioned before, we talked about Carbohydrates (carbs) in my nutrition class this week. As it turns out, many people have misconceptions about carbs. Some things people say are:

"Oh, carbs make you fat" or
"Carbs are bad for you." or
"Don't eat carbs if you're trying to lose weight"

Well, I'm here to say that all of those are wrong. Carbs ALONE doesn't not make you fat nor hinder your weight loss efforts. In fact, carbs are essential to day to day living. It's nearly impossible to avoid carbs and our bodies cannot survive without them. Our brain and nerve cells need them, as carbs are the body's main source of energy. Even our blood needs them, in the form of glucose (there's a science behind this, but this is all you need to know for now). Carbs are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and other sources.
I can explain the science of carbs and how it's digested in our body, the types of carbohydrates and all of that, but I don't know if you guys want a science lesson.

For now, I'll just tell you some things that can help with what most people want: Weight loss.

As you there, one diet that many people do is the low carb diet. One of the main low carb diets is the Atkin's Diet.

I know, I know. You've heard people have lost weight on the low carb diet. It does sound really tempting. But, there's one thing you need to know: it's not fat that they have lost. It's even worse.
They lost muscle and water weight. Let me explain a little science behind this.

As it turns out, the body needs carbohydrates to function. I know, big surprise. The body uses glucose as it's main source of energy, which is carbs. The body also uses fat, but carbohydrates is used the most, especially in more intense levels of physical activity. Glucose is easily accessible to use as a source of energy, not needing oxygen for it to be burned. Fat needs oxygen. That means if you're really physically active, you need to consume more carbs.

On a low carb diet, you deplete your body of the energy it needs, on the normal functioning level and on the exercise level. Have you ever felt tired and drained of energy after not eating for such a long time? That's your body running low on glucose. What's even worse is that if you're not eating enough carbs, your body tries to find another source of energy.

You may think that the other source of energy is fat, but, wrong! The body will find other ways to make glucose to fuel to body and the first thing your body will use is protein to make it's own glucose. It will first use the available amino acids in your blood (which there isn't much). Then, your body will break down it's own tissue, including tissue from muscles and even our organs. This is called gluconeogenesis.  If done long enough, it'll damage your organs. On top of that, your body won't be making the proteins it needs since it's all being used to make glucose. You lose muscle, thus reducing your metabolism.

Another downfall to low carb diets is that it can lead to ketoacidosis. What that is is when there are unusually high amounts of ketones in your body. Ketones are acidic and can interfere with the body's normal functions due to the pH imbalance. They're produced when the body burns fat as a source of energy. High amounts of them can lead to coma and possibly even death. Ketones are produced in the process of ketosis, when there is low carb intake, fasting or vigorous exercise. They suppress appetite, cause dehydration and acetone breath (bad breath). You can usually tell if someone is on a low carb diet by smelling their breath, since low carb diet breath has a distinct smell.

As you see, yes, people can lose weight on low carb diets. But, it's unhealthy and it's not fat that people will lose. Once they bounce back to their normal eating habits after being on a low carb diet, they end up gaining the weight back and possibly gain even more since their metabolism slowed down due to muscle loss. It's not healthy and will not work in the long run. You need your carbohydrates and you can see why after you start exercising more, you tend to crave more carbs. Your body needs the energy.

Now that you know that low carb diets are fad, there is another thing you should be weary about when it comes to carbs. It's called the glycemic index. People tend to use this to see if certain foods are healthy for you. But, actually,  it measures how foods can raise blood glucose levels, which in turn triggers the surge of insulin. With insulin, blood glucose drops. The higher the glycemic index, the more potential it has to change blood glucose.

However, there are two things to think about with the glycemic index. For one thing, it's not an accurate measure. It also depends on the type of carbohydrates, how the food is prepared, it's fat and its fiber content. On top of that, fructose has a glycemic level of zero, but it can still be unhealthy for you.

Another thing too is that, the glycemic index was use to help diabetics treat diabetes. They constantly have to measure their blood sugar (glucose) levels and they need to know which foods can potentially change their levels. They need to consume more foods lower on the glycemic index so that their blood sugar doesn't change too much. However, normal people don't need to worry about this. Their body can handle it.

However, endurance atheletes, atheletes in general, may want to make use of this. They need the energy for their workouts. When I say energy, I mean the energy from carbohydrates. After they workout, it's best to consume foods higher in the glycemic level. They need to store the carbs so they have the energy for their next workout.

I guess that's all I'll talk about for carbs today. I don't want to make this too long of a post. But, I do want to stress that you should eat more whole grain foods, such as brown rice, whole wheat bread (with whole wheat flour or whole something as a first ingredient), and more fruits, vegetables and legumes.

Now, before I end this post, I have one more thing to say. You really do need more carbs, especially when doing intense workouts. I've been doing a lot more intense cardio sessions. I've been doing HIIT, running along the river, interval training on the elliptical and running around the indoor track. Today, I ran 4 miles in 32 min and 54 seconds! I also went on the elliptical for about 35 min and did around 3.7 miles. Sometimes, when I don't do the running, I do intervals on the elliptical for an hour. I do this along with HIIT. I've been craving more carbs! This includes cereal, bread, sweets and fruits.

Anyway, I hope this helps you guys understand more about carbs. I'll post more about carbs later on. By the way, I am not a nutritionist/dietitian, but I am studying to become a dietitian. This is what I learned from my professor in my university nutrition class.

If you have any questions, email me.

Whole Wheat Naan Recipe

Hola, amigos! How are you guys doing today? Well, I've been doing alright. I made whole wheat naan today and it was pretty good. But, I can't lie though. It does not compare to the naan I've had at an Indian restaurant I ate before. It was AMAZING. I still have yet to recreate it. Then again, they didn't use whole wheat flour...Mines didn't turn out looking much like naan though.
Anyway, before I give you guys the recipe, I have to tell you about the cookies I made for my class. Yes, the cookies were soft, but people actually enjoyed them. No one spit them out or anything, which is saying something. After all, they are made with GARBANZO beans. My professor quite enjoyed them, even though he doesn't like garbanzo beans. I told him about these ahead of time and he was hesitant. But, he says I have talent for making them taste good. It's just that the texture is different.
Along with that, I've eaten some things I have to review. For one thing, I have to review the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut LUNA Bar and the Chocolate Dipped Coconut LUNA Bar. I also have to review the Summer Roll that Raley's/Bel-Air sells. It has shrimp, carrots, avocado, rice paper skin and some other veggies.
The LUNA Bars, as you guys now, are my favorite flavors, but I just have to review them. I've mentioned them on my blog before. The Coconut one tasted like the Girl Scout Cookies. I actually ate it today, but as you can see, the chocolate melted. Oh, hot weather.  The White Chocolate one taste like the cookie, in a good way. As for the Summer rolls, they taste all right. The inside was delicious, but I didn't like the outside rice paper skin. I ate both of those on Monday.

Anyway, on Monday, I went to my nutrition class and we talked about carbohydrates for 3 hours. The funny thing is that, I was consuming tons of carbs during that time. I had just bought a Berry Fulfilling from Jamba Juice (since they're having the $1 dollar sale!). I will tell you guys more about the lecture the next post. I will also tell you about the low carb diet and how it's bad for you.
So, yesterday, I woke up pretty tired, but I still went and did my normal workout. Maybe I should take a rest day from working out, but I'd feel guilty for not working out...anyway, I ran near the river con un amigo, which was pretty nice. Me and my friend ran a bit faster this time too. I timed it, from that time and from the time before. I want us to improve and get faster.
Today, I went to the gym and did my elliptical interval again. I did around 7 and a half miles in 65 minutes. It was a great workout and I was really sweating after. Then, I ate a turkey sandwich and some carrots.

I'm growing addicted to carrots! They're so yummy! I also ate fruit loops today too. I know that they're not healthy, but I haven't eaten them in such a long time.
I also went food shopping. Here's what I bought:

I bought this during the weekend...

Anyway, I made whole wheat naan today and I made guacamole, with greek yogurt. The guacamole tastes alright, but it isn't that great. But, I will post the recipe for guacamole whenever I can. I still have other things I want to post about first. Anyway, I plan on making brown rice krispie treats with the brown rice krispy cereal. As for the dulce de leche cheerios, I love dulce de leche! I can't wait to try it. I can't wait to try to granola bars and the kashi oatmeal too.

Now, here's the recipe for whole wheat naan.

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup nonfat greek yogurt
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp oil
Directions:
  1. In a bowl. sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  2. Heat up the milk and then mix in the sugar. Mix in the yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Make a well in the flour and then add in all the wet ingredients.
  4. Mix it all together and then once it comes together, start kneading the dough.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 2 hours.
  6. Preheat the oven to 450 F.
  7. Divide the dough into 6-8 parts Roll it out to 1/4 in thick.
  8. Bake for 5 to 8 minutes.
  9. Take it out and serve immediately.

There are too many pictures that I won't upload the steps. But, it's pretty easy. I hope you guys enjoy.

Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

I made this from Chocolate Covered Katie's website today! It's delicious. I made it into small cookies instead of a huge giant cookie pie because I'm bringing it for my class and I don't want to bother cutting up a cookie pie. I also made it before but as a regular pie. This is the link to the one I made before.
Here's the picture of the cookies I made today:

This is how they looked before going in the oven (and the batter!):

It looks better baked, in my opinion. Anyway, they're delicious. I'll post more pictures later. And, shh. Don't tell my classmates what the ingredients are.

So, what's your favorite healthy dessert?

Fun Weekend! Six Flags!

Medusa!!!
I had so much fun today. I went to Six Flags with my family. I went on so many rides and had a great time.
We arrived really early, so we had to wait about 10 minutes before they let us go deep into the park. It was really cold in the morning but it warmed up by noon. Once they did let us go, everyone started running to Medusa. Good thing me and my sister were in front because we got to ride on the first ride of Medusa. Well, the workers told us not to run, so we started fast walking after running half way there. It was a good move because once we got off Medusa, there was already a long line (and we went on the first ride of the day!).
After that, we went on Kong. There was no line for that either and we sat up front. Well, maybe it's because the park just opened, but we were so happy we didn't have to wait in line! I remember the first time I went on 7 years ago. It hurt my head. :/

Kong!!
Personally, out of the two, I like Medusa better. Kong is just too bumpy for my liking and it made my shoulders and neck hurt for some strange reason.
After that, we also went on Boomerang!
Even though Boomerang is smaller than Medusa, it seemed a bit scarier at first. Maybe it's because of how we saw how high up we were when we went up backwards on the ride. Anyway, Medusa was so much more fun.
After that was lunch time. Lunch was actually pretty good, in my opinion. I was hoping for BBQ so that I can get a veggie burger, but instead, it was Mexican food (my fav, but so high calorie sometimes!). I ended up getting chicken, refried beans, guacamole (high in fat, but has a lot of nutritional value!) and tortilla chips. It wasn't too bad nutritionally though. It tasted good. I love guacamole.
But, then came the churros and the ice cream bar. I love churros..and ice cream. So, I ate both. I know..so much food..so many calories. I'm a fatty.

Anyway, after that, we went on more rides. We even went on the Voodoo and some other rides like Scat- a-bout (something like that, where someone threw up on the ride...) and other spinning rides. We also went on Cobra, a smaller roller coaster (since my little brother wanted to go on it) and the Tazmanian Devil.
After that, we got some drinks, I ate another mini churro and then off we went to Monsoon Falls, a water ride. I got soaking wet on that ride. It was awesome. We even stood on the bridge so that we'd get splashed with more water from the ride.
We decided to go the new Superman Ride. What sucked was that it broke down right when we were about to go on! I was so sad. We didn't get to go on it. Then again, the seatbelts didn't look safe at all for that type of ride. There were no shoulder restraints at all. They only had lap ones. I don't believe that's sufficient for a ride that has a 90 degree drop and goes upside down.
After that, we decided to go on Medusa again. Well, that didn't happen because Medusa broke down as well. We were so sad. So, we went on Kong again. After that, we went on other mild rides. There was a ride similar to the spinning tea cups, but instead, it's like spinning monkeys. It was pretty funny because there were these two guys older than me just by a little that kept spinning and spinning it. They got totally dizzy after the ride.
After that, we walked around. They had this:
I can't believe they had Hello Kitty!! I'm so sad though, because I didn't get to win one. The claw almost grabbed it, but it dropped. =(
And, I can't believe they had this too:
M&M stairs. How awesome is that?
We watched the Dolphin show after that, which was pretty fun. Who knew dolphins can do so many tricks.  I ate a Coconut Chocolate Chip Clif Bar and a little bit of cotton candy while watching it. Then, we went on one last ride and then off we went back home. We stopped by a Chinese Restaurant for dinner.

Anyway, I had a fun day today. But, before I go, I'd like to mention another few rides that you should watch out for.

Roar is the wooden rollercoaster they have there. However, it has broken down far too many times. And, you see that red one that's next to it? It has a dead end and it doesn't look safe. Who knows what can happen with that roller coaster. And, you see the next photo? That's Hammerhead Shark. It spins a 360 but the seat belts and the shoulder strains are too loose. They are fun rides, but there's always a risk.

Anyway, do you guys like amusement parks?
What's your favorite type of rides? I love rollercoasters.
What's your favorite amusement park food?
